Frequently asked questions
- What does chmod 755 mean?
- The owner can read, write and execute; group and others can read and execute (rwxr-xr-x). It is typical for directories and scripts.
- 644 or 600 for a config file?
- 644 lets everyone read it; 600 restricts it to the owner, which is right for files containing secrets such as SSH keys.
- What is the sticky bit?
- On a directory such as /tmp (1777), only a file’s owner can delete or rename it.
